Brooklyn, New York is home to a number of prestigious colleges and universities including: Brooklyn College, Brooklyn Law School and the SUNY Downstate Medical Center, the oldest hospital-based medical school in the United States. Brooklyn is served by Kings County Hospital Center and numerous other hospitals and medical centers. Brooklyn, New York is governed by the New York City Charter; the city provides public education managed by the New York City Department of Education, as well as libraries, public safety, recreational facilities, sanitation, water and welfare services on Staten Island.

The New York State Unified Court System is divided geographically into four judicial departments and twelve judicial districts, Long Island is located in the 2nd Judicial Department9th Judicial District.
