The Bedford Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corps, founded in 1988 as the nation’s first minority volunteer ambulance corps, has the dual mission of saving lives in medical emergencies and improving the community through training and job skills.

One of the busiest ambulance corps in the nation, the BSVAC responds to more than 100 jobs a month. Its emergency response time is under four minutes per call.

The BSVAC has trained more than 2,000 local residents as first responders, and more than 100 of them have gone on to advanced careers in medicine.

BSVAC also offers EMT courses, CPR, volunteer opportunities and a program for young people called Trauma Troopers.
