The Gerritsen Beach Fire Department, founded in 1922, is an all-volunteer force that protects the life and property of the residents of Gerritsen Beach 24 hours a day.  In 2005, the GBFD formed a community emergency response team, and residents completed a disaster-training program. The GBFD has been recognized by the New York City Office of Emergency Management as a vital part of their second responder program.
