Long Island, New York has the distinction of being the longest, largest and most populous island in the contiguous United States. The island encompasses 1,401 square miles, and the western half of Long Island is almost entirely urban in nature. Long Island's eastern half is still partly rural. The island is commonly divided into the North Shore, which is on the Long Island Sound, and South Shore, which is on the Atlantic Ocean. There are two cities in Long Island; Long Beach and Glen Cove, plus numerous towns, villages and hamlets. Two Indian reservations, Poospatuck and Shinnecock, are also located in Long Island, NY.
The New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens are technically located on Long Island, but the boroughs are not usually referred to as being part of Long Island.
Long Island is known for its affluence; Forbes Magazine lists Nassau and Suffolk Counties among the top 25 richest counties in America.
Many thousands of Long Islanders commute to work in New York City each day. Long Island is served by the Long Island Railroad; ferries connect Suffolk County to the state of Connecticut, and numerous bridges and tunnels serve Long Island, NY. The Long Island Expressway, Southern State Parkway and the Meadowbrook Parkway are the major roadways serving Long Island. Long Island boasts Macarthur Airport as well as four private airports. In adjacent Queens County are JFK International Airport and LaGuardia Airport.
Long Island, New York residents have a wide variety of health care options. The North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System provides Long Island residents with numerous hospitals including the well-known Long Island Jewish Medical Center and is affiliated with health centers and nursing homes throughout Long Island.
District Courts, located in Nassau County and Suffolk County arraign felonies and handle misdemeanors and lesser offenses as well as civil lawsuits involving claims of up to $15,000. County Supreme Courts handle larger personal injury claims. Nassau County District Court is located at 99 Main Street, Hempstead, NY 1155. Suffolk County has six courthouses in the five western towns of Suffolk County: Babylon, Brookhaven, Huntington, Islip, and Smithtown.
The New York State Unified Court System is divided geographically into four judicial departments and 12 judicial districts. Long Island is located in the 2nd Judicial Department, 10th Judicial District.
