Jamaica Hospital Medical Center EMS operates one of the busiest hospital emergency departments in New York City. More than 129,000 emergency patients are seen in the department each year.
The facility has been designated a level I trauma center and a stroke center. It also offers Fast Track for minor injuries and illnesses, an adult asthma treatment center, a chest pain center and a six-bed unit that includes central monitoring with electrocardiography capability.
There is also a separate, kid-friendly pediatric emergency department that supports a 24-hour ambulance service, staffed with highly skilled paramedics and EMTs who provide basic and advanced life support. A medical bike unit was started in 1996, allowing EMTs and paramedics on mountain bikes – equipped with 2-way radios, portable cell phones, medical supplies, oxygen and cardiac defibrillators – to arrive at the scene more quickly than a traditional ambulance.
