Staten Island University Hospital EMS has a state-of-the-art emergency department. It has been designated a level I trauma center and burn center.  Nearly 100,000 people visit the emergency department every year.

The department has implemented a number of ongoing initiatives, such as treatment protocols, which ensure the rapid, efficient and accurate assessment of patients. Protocols have been established for chest pain, asthma, stroke, pneumonia and heart failure.

Specialized services in the emergency department include a stroke center team, a cardiac cath team, burn center and on-call trauma team.

The hospital plans to expand its waiting room and establish a dedicated pediatrics waiting room in the near future, as well as developing a state of the art triage system that will decrease wait times while increasing patient satisfaction.

The emergency department’s academic affiliation with SUNY Brooklyn/Kings County Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program allows the staff to incorporate cutting edge care into their treatment of patients.
